A large shrub that grows up to 16' tall and is commonly found in forest edges or abandoned fields. It produces male and female flowers on the same plant in April. The nuts, ripe in August, can be eaten raw, roasted, or ground into flour, or left for the wildlife. It likes full sun to part shade. Sold as a dormant bareroot seedling, 18-24 inches tall.
