Aug 3, 2023: Blueberry IPM Twilight Meeting

Blueberry IPM Twilight Meeting at Heron Pond Farm, 299 Main Ave, South Hampton, NH 03827

August 3rd, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Join us for this in-person meeting focused on the many aspects of highbush blueberry management and integrated pest management (IPM). Special focus will be placed on the recently installed insect exclusion netting system made possible in large part through support from an NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant. This netting system was installed primarily to prevent the invasive fly called spotted winged drosophila (SWD) from being able to reach the ripening fruit and lay eggs in them. There are additional considerations related to netting installations, and we will discuss the pros and cons from multiple perspectives. We will also hear from Anna Wallingford, Research Assistant Professor and IPM specialist, and her graduate student, Catherine Doheny Coverdale, regarding SWD biology and current research focused on minimizing fruit infestation using cultural practices. Chris Callahan, UVM Extension Professor of Agricultural Engineering, will participate to share updates about his work on a recent SARE project focused on exclusion netting system construction and costs.  There will be opportunities for discussion with specialists and fellow growers. Partner organizations involved with this project, including NH Conservation Districts, Natural Resource Conservation Service and Xerces Society will contribute to the discussion. PAT credits pending. No registration required.
